Note

This course version is for students commencing in 2020 and onwards.

The Bachelor of Design in Product Design prepares students for a career in the global product design industry. Students learn how to tackle complex problem solving, explore creative solutions, and develop realistic outcomes that could make a mark on the world.

UTS believes a hands-on approach is fundamental for every aspiring designer. As such, the student's starting point is the individual design and making of an object. Throughout their studies students learn how to design, prototype and test design solutions, drawing on cutting-edge technologies and approaches, such as UX (user experience), wearables and electronics and gain hands-on experience in the faculty's digital and fabrication workshops.

Alongside a strong technical base, the degree applies the creative problem-solving required to design experiences that make a difference to everyday life, whether in developing economies or digital cultures. Central to this approach is an understanding of the relationships between objects, culture, economy, technology, business and human behaviour.

Course aims

This integrated approach to education prepares graduates to work in product design and related design professions both locally and internationally. Alongside the core subjects, students can take electives that further develop a specialisation, such as furniture design; designer-maker enterprise; advanced digital design and manufacture; and environmentally responsible design practices. After graduation students can also pursue further study in specialised fields like vehicle design and clinical design, or further academic study in product design related research.

Samuel McDonnell: Integrated Product Design Student

Sam: So integrated product design to me is sort of a blend between a few areas of design. Its more creative than engineering, its more practical than art, and its more hands on than something like graphic design.

The best part about my degree I would have to say is the people, because once you remove the facilities, the tools, the laser cutters, the 3D printers and classrooms, all of that, what you are left with is the people in the institution, the people who know all the tips and tricks to pass on to the students, the people who will pass on all their knowledge about how to get where you want to be.

My highlight of uni so far, last year I worked on a project, a group project between semesters as part of Sydney design week, we designed and constructed a vertical garden to go on display in the powerhouse museum, so that was really cool.

So this year I was involved in two competitions, both of which I made the finals for, and an outcome of that was that I basically landed an internship at a place in Brisbane. So when I fly up to Brisbane, I will basically be interning with a place, its a furniture design studio, and my role will be to be acting like a sponge, soaking up as much information as I can from the people who know the industry the best. And I'll be, you know, getting my hands dirty doing all kinds of things that are the norms of running a design studio, and learning about the business of design.

Course fees

For relevant fee information, please choose from the following:

Local student

All students at UTS pay tuition fees to contribute towards the cost of their studies.

In 2022 all offers made to domestic undergraduate students will be for Commonwealth Supported Places (CSP), which means that the Australian government makes a substantial contribution towards the cost of your education, and you pay the balance through student contributions.

The amount you pay depends on your area of study and the number of credit points (cp) in which you enrol. At UTS 48 credit points is considered to be one Equivalent Full Time Study Load (EFTSL).

The table to the right shows the amount a student can expect to pay for one year of full-time study (1.0 EFTSL).

Students can choose to pay their student contribution upfront, or if eligible, can defer their fees through HECS-HELP.

In addition to tuition fees, students are required to pay a Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF). The purchase of textbooks and other course materials may also result in additional cost.

You can calculate your student contribution as a percentage of the amounts shown on the table. Fee rates are divided into four bands covering broad discipline areas.  It is important to note that a particular subject within a course may fall within a different band.

For example, if you are enrolled in a 6 credit point Architecture subject, your contribution would be 6/48 x $8,021 = $1,002.

Student contribution amounts for 2022 commencing students

Area of study and student contribution band

Law, Accounting, Administration, Economics, Commerce, Communications, Society and Culture $14,630
Medicine, Dental and Veterinary Science $11,401
